A Maktab is a place where children attain the basic necessary education of Islam. They learn how to recite the Quran, read and understand Ahadith, learn about their Aqidah and Fiqh in a practical and often engaging way. Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ mentions: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” Children also learn how to be an active part of society in light of Islamic teachings such as honest dealings, good social conduct, etiquettes and manners.
The Maktab system is one which has seen success in many parts of the world, such as, South Africa and the United Kingdom. These countries have seen the deen of their children being preserved, but not only that, they now have a community of Ulama and Huffadh and Imams who are 'home-grown' and understand the challenges of navigating life in the 21st century along with being qualified in fields such as medicine, finance, law, teachnology and more!
The best Maktabs have the child's wellbeing and education at the center of their attention. Teachers are well trained in Islamic sciences and are passionate about education. They deliver the lessons in an engaging and enjoyable manner nurturing the love of Islam in the children's hearts. They include the teaching of Quran, Tajweed and Islamic Studies subjects. Some may also offer Arabic as a language to further the children's connection with the Quran and Ahadith. The Maktab would also have systems in place for successful progress, rewards and administration.
It is the establishments of maktabs and the attadance in them which will preserve the Iman of our future generation and prepare scholars and imams who will be able to guide entire communities spiritually through challenging modern times.
